UK retail sales down 0.9% in August

The number of goods bought in retail sales in the United Kingdom fell 0.9% on a monthly basis in August, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said on Friday.

The figure was 4.6% higher compared to their pre-coronavirus pandemic levels in February 2020. Non-food store volumes decreased 1.0% month-on-month, while food stores declined 1.2% in the same period. Automotive fuel sales volumes grew by 1.5%.

The proportion of retail sales online rose to 27.7% in August from 27.1% in July.
