UK retail sales tumble 18.1% in April

Retail sales in the United Kingdom slid by a record 18.1% month-on-month in April, the country's Office for National Statistics reported on Friday. On an annual basis, the figure was 22.6% lower.

Food stores registered a fall of 4.1% in April compared to the prior month. Non-food stores tumbled a whopping 41.7% in the same period while fuel collapsed 52%. Non-store retailing was up 18% on a monthly basis.

The proportion spent online soared to the highest on record at 30.7%, versus April 2019's 19.1%.
