UK retail sales up by 0.2% in July

Retail sales in the United Kingdom added 0.2% in July, the Office of National Statistics said on Thursday. On an annualized basis, the volume of goods sold in retail was up by 3.3% as the value increased 3.9%. Only food stores performed worse, down 0.5% annually in the last reported month. Non-store retailing was the largest contributor to both the annual and monthly growth, with 2.2% and 0.7% advances in the quantity bought, respectively.

The growth recorded by department stores was 1.6% after six consecutive months of decline, the release noted. Meanwhile, online sales grew 12.7% year-over-year, reaching a share of 19.9% of all retail sales. Excluding automotive fuel, the volume and value of sales were up by 2.9% and 3.4%, respectively.

In the three months through July, retail sales rose by 0.5% compared to the previous three months, with less activity in fuel and food stores.
