UK retail sales up by 1.4% in April

Retail sales volumes in the United Kingdom advanced by 1.4% in comparison to the previous month, exceeding expectations, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) stated in its report published on Friday.

Annually, the figure went down by 4.9%, which is less than market analysts predicted. In comparison to the level before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, sales grew by 4.1%.

The biggest contribution came from non-store retailing sales volumes, which went up by 3.7%, followed by a rise of 2.8% in food store sales. Meanwhile, the proportion of retail sales online climbed to 27.0% in comparison to March.
