UK says assault on BBC reporter 'unacceptable'

Britain's Business Secretary Grant Shapps voiced concern over the assault and custody of the BBC journalist, Ed Lawrence, in Shanghai calling such an act "unacceptable" on the air of LBC radio on Monday. "Whatever else happens, freedom of the press should be sacrosanct," Shapps told the radio.

Namely, Britain's national broadcaster's reporter was "beaten" and "arrested" by Shanghai law enforcement on Sunday while he was covering mass anti-lockdown protests in China's biggest financial hub. The protests come as the country faced backlash with the authorities pressuring the zero-COVID policy on the public after registering thousands of positive virus cases.

Demonstrators called on Chinese President Xi Jinping to step down as strict coronavirus measures allegedly delayed firefighters from reaching the victims after a fire broke out in a building in the region of Xinjiang, killing at least ten people on November 24.
