UK taking 'cautious approach' to reopening - official

United Kingdom Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick (pictured) stated on Friday that the government is taking a "cautious approach" when it comes to the lifting of coronavirus restrictions.

Commenting on the decision to remove Portugal from the travel green list, Jenrick asserted that Downing Street wants to do "everything right," before making the decision to either keep or ditch the June 21 reopening deadline. Additionally, he said that the government doesn't want to risk the progress it has made thus far, but added that he understands the British public's frustration with the travel rules, which he labeled as "sensible."

The change in the travel rules for Portugal and other countries was prompted by the arrival of the new so-called Nepal coronavirus variant, a mutation of the Indian or Delta variant, with Portugal doubling their daily case numbers in the last three weeks as a result. Meanwhile, Public Health England stated they are investigating some 20 cases of the new mutation in the country, as fears mount that lockdown measures will stay in place beyond June 21.
