UK to extend furlough scheme until end of September

British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak (pictured) will announce tomorrow that the United Kingdom government will extend its furlough scheme until the end of September, the Treasury revealed on Tuesday.

The plan entails that the government covers 80% of furloughed workers' wages. Also, 600,000 additional self-employed people could gain access to funds from the program. The employers' contributions to their workers' wages will be raised from 10% in July to 20% in August and September.

"Our Covid support schemes have been a lifeline to millions, protecting jobs and incomes across the UK. There's now light at the end of the tunnel with a roadmap for reopening, so it's only right that we continue to help business and individuals through the challenging months ahead - and beyond," Sunak is expected to say tomorrow during his budget speech.
