UK transport minister quits over May's Brexit plan

United Kingdom transport minister Jo Johnson, brother of former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, resigned from his post saying he does not want to support Prime Minister Theresa May's plan on divorce from the European Union. Johnson wrote in a blog post that the prime minister offered the MPs to choose between "vassalage and chaos."

"It has become increasingly clear to me that the withdrawal agreement, which is being finalized in Brussels and Whitehall even as I write, will be a terrible mistake," Johnson pointed out. "To present the nation with a choice between two deeply unattractive outcomes, vassalage and chaos, is a failure of British statecraft on a scale unseen since the Suez crisis," he added.

Johnson also said the agreement pushed by the prime minister will leave London "weakened economically," uncertain for businesses, and a lot of unclarity about which Brussels rules must be followed. He stressed that he thinks it would be "entirely right to go back to the people and ask them to confirm their decision to leave the EU," confirming his stance that the Brexit referendum should be repeated. The final version of May's Brexit agreement is expected to be published next week.
