UK warns of potential 3-hour power cuts

National Grid PLC's Electricity System Operator (ESO) warned on Thursday it is possible it will be forced to impose three-hour power cuts in some zones of the United Kingdom during the winter in the wake of the energy crisis linked to Russia's military operation in Ukraine.

The operator said the cuts would be implemented in case the country falls short of its supplies of electricity or gas in order to prioritize heating. Consumers that could be affected would receive a one-day notice about the blackout.

Earlier, the British government introduced a price cap for electricity at £211 per MWh and for gas at £75 per MWh for businesses to help the public weather the crisis. It also announced its plan to reduce the UK's dependence on Russian energy products.
