UK willing to extend customs union with EU after 2021 - report

Due to a deadlock between ministers disagreeing on the future deal with the European Union, London is willing to remain in the customs union with Brussels even after 2021, when the Brexit deal expires, the Telegraph reported citing a source close to the matter.

The ministers rejected earlier proposals from the EU as they wanted to avoid a hard border with Ireland. On Tuesday, they agreed on a new version of the Irish Border "backstop" agreement, replacing references to the single market with shared customs rules. Earlier in April, the EU already rejected London's proposals for a solution to the Irish border issue.

However, Britain's overstay would be limited, and may not go beyond 2023, when a new technology necessary to administer the borders will become available, the Brexit sub-committee agreed.
