Ukraine says Russia 'shelling' Europe's largest nuclear power plant
A fire broke out in the area around the Zaporozhskaya nuclear power plant in Ukraine, Ukrainian officials announced, blaming the incident on "continuous enemy shelling" by the Russian Armed forces.
"If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chornobyl," said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, being that the six-reactor power station is the largest in Europe. He went on to ask Moscow to "immediately" cease fire and allow firefighters to establish a security zone. Spokesman of the press service of the nuclear power plant, Andrey Tuz, later informed a Ukrainian local television station that there is no threat of radiation spread.
The attack comes after Russian troops, on Thursday, opened fire in the city of Energodar where the plant is located, after entering with tanks, according to an earlier announcement by Anton Herashchenko, adviser to the Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs.
