UN 'alarmed' over Hong Kong arrests

The United Nations human rights office said on Friday it is "alarmed" over the arrests carried out under China's new national security law for Hong Kong.

"We are alarmed that arrests are already being made under the law with immediate effect, when there is not full information and understanding of the scope of the offenses," UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said at a briefing in Geneva.

Ten people were arrested for violating the controversial new law on Wednesday, while hundreds of others have been detained during marches to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of Hong Kong's handover from British rule to China.
