UN calls on China to exercise restraint over protests
United Nations Human Rights spokesman Jeremy Laurence called on China on Monday to exercise moderation in the face of the latest peaceful protests in that country.
"As our office has urged consistently during the Covid pandemic, restrictions by the authorities need to be necessary and proportionate in terms of scientific, medical advice, and non-discriminatory in their application," the representative stated while adding that "any restrictive measures need to be limited in duration, and there should be safeguards and mechanisms through which people can channel their concerns and seek redress."
According to the latest report published by the authorities, new coronavirus infections in China increased by 40,347, another daily record, with 3,822 symptomatic and 36,525 asymptomatic cases documented over the previous 24 hours.
