UN urges the world to cut methane emissions

The United Nations Environment Program and the Climate and Clear Coalition published a report on Thursday, saying that to avoid the worst impacts of global climate change, it is necessary to drastically cut the emissions of methane.

Globally methane emissions can be cut by 45% over the next decade, according to the report, which will help avoid a 0.3 degrees Celsius of warming by 2045. More than half of the methane volume comes from the oil and gas production, waste sector and agriculture industry.

"Cutting methane is the strongest lever we have to slow climate change over the next 25 years and complements necessary efforts to reduce carbon dioxide. [...] We need international cooperation to urgently reduce methane emissions as much as possible this decade," UN environmental official Inger Andersen said.
