UN warns 'solidarity missing in action' on COVID shots

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated on Saturday his warnings about COVID-19 vaccine inequality between the developed world and emerging nations. "A majority of the wealthier world is vaccinated while others still wait for their first dose. A surplus in some countries. Empty shelves in others. This is a moral indictment of the state of our world. Solidarity is missing in action - just when we need it most," Guterres said.

The United States pledged to donate an additional 500 million doses globally, while China will give two billion doses by the end of the year. However, current vaccination rates show large disparities, as most western nations have inoculated over 70% of their population, while many countries in Asia and Africa stay below 5%.
