Union accuses Starbucks of retaliation after stores close

Starbucks Workers United accused on Tuesday Starbucks Corporation of deciding to close two of its stores, in Seattle and Kansas City, as a retaliatory measure against the workers, who were trying to unionize at the aforementioned locations.

"Of the 19 stores Starbucks has closed in the past few months, 42 percent had union activity. This is clear retaliation," asserted the Union in a statement, adding that although the Kansas store is the "second busiest in the district" the company gave an excuse it was shutting it down due to "safety concerns, yet the same issues have existed for years without the Company responding."

The Union noted that if the company truly wanted to tackle the safety issues "they could work with partners and our union. Instead, [interim CEO Howard] Schultz and Starbucks have sent a message loud and clear — complain about safety, and we’ll close your store." The Union further underlined that the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) issued 22 official complaints against Starbucks, which cover "over 80 charges and 542 violations of labor law."
