United Airlines pilots reach deal to avoid 2,850 furloughs

United Airlines announced on Monday that it will manage to avoid a part of its planned furloughs in October after pilots agreed to reduce their schedules and maintain pay rates.

The agreement means 2,850 pilots will not be furloughed at least until mid-2021. "In addition to avoiding furloughs, this agreement greatly enhances our ability to bounce back – so we can welcome more passengers and return to the 2019 levels of seat and fleet advancement more quickly," United's senior vice president of flight operations, Bryan Quigley, said in a staff note.

Earlier, United announced plans to furlough around 16,000 staff from October after the government's aid to the aviation sector expires. Today's deal means the number of furloughs next month will now stand at a little over 13,000.
