US accuses Maduro of 'gross human rights abuses'

The United States Department of State issued a statement condemning "gross violations of human rights" by the "illegitimate" government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and called on all countries to recognize opposition leader and self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido as the legitimate leader of the South American country.

"The United States remains deeply concerned by the gross human rights abuses and violations detailed in the UN Human Rights report. This report on Venezuela illustrates the depth of the despair and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela," State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said. "No dictatorship lasts forever. Venezuela will soon be free, and those responsible for abuses and violations of human rights in Venezuela will be held accountable," she added.

Earlier, Russia once again expressed support for Maduro and accused the US of attempting to destabilize Venezuela by "influencing the domestic policy situation" in the country.
