US airstrike response avoided confrontation with Iran - report

United States airstrikes on Iranian-backed militia in Syria on February 26 were intended to signal to Iran that the President Joe Biden administration would respond to previous attacks in northern Iraq without starting a confrontation with Teheran or framing the Iraqi prime minister, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday citing a senior White House official.

The choice to attack Syrian grounds was made in order to avoid scrutiny and criticism on Biden's ally Iraqi prime minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, which could have broken out if the attacks were held on Iraqi territory.

When the US-led coalition was attacked, US Defense Secretary is reported to have told the president "You own the clock", meaning that the US had the time to strategically plan its response. "We had a pretty coordinated diplomatic and military plan here," an anonymous administration official said.
