US annual inflation at 5.4% in September

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for all items in the United States saw an annual gain of 5.4% in September, surpassing expectations, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Wednesday.

The figure increased 0.4% when compared to the previous month. The index for food and shelter contributed more than half of the monthly increase, with the index for food rising 0.9% monthly and 4.6% annually. Additionally, the index for all items less food and energy rose 0.2% in September.

Lastly, the energy index and the gasoline index both saw monthly gains, climbing 1.2% and 1.3% respectively. The energy index saw an annual hike of 24.8%.
