US asks UN to stop oil deliveries to N. Korea over sanctions breach

The United States accused Pyongyang of breaching energy sanctions and asked the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to request a suspension of all oil deliverers to North Korea as a result.

In a document submitted to the UNSC, Washington claimed North Korea violated the UNSC embargo which capped oil exports to North Korea at 500,000 barrels per year. The US claimed North Korea tankers "likely" delivered petroleum products which were "illicitly procured via shit-to-ship transfers" to the country at least 89 times since the beginning of the year.

In December 2017, the UNSC unanimously approved the energy sanctions against North Korea in response to Pyongyang's ballistic missile tests. However, since then Pyongyang announced it will stop carrying out nuclear and missile launches and dismantled its Punggye-ri nuclear test site
