US business inventories up by 0.5% in April

Inventories in the manufacturing and trade sectors in the United States rose 0.5% in April to reach $2,029.8 billion, according to a report by the US Census Bureau released on Friday. On an annual basis, the figure came in 5.3% higher than in April 2018.

The combined value of trade sales and manufacturers' shipments for the fourth month of 2019, adjusted for seasonal and trading day differences but not for price changes, came in at $1,462 billion, slipping 0.2% on a monthly basis but increasing by 2.8% annually.

The ratio between business inventories and sales was 1.39 at the end of April. Twelve months ago, the ratio was 1.36.
