US, China discussing high level meeting next week - report

The United States and China are looking to organize a high-level meeting in Italy next week, according to a report published by the Financial Times on Wednesday.

If the deal is made, Washington will send Secretary of State Anthony Blinken as well as Deputy Secretary Wendy Sherman, while Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will represent Beijing. Furthermore, the White House is considering President Joe Biden making a phone call with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

The plans come after the G7 issued a joint statement condemning China's policies on trade and human rights earlier this month, calling for Beijing to "respect human rights and fundamental freedoms."
