US: China misrepresents trade negotiations

The United States accused China of pursuing a "blame game misrepresenting the nature and history of trade negotiations between the two countries" and expressed disappointment over the so-called white paper regarding trade negotiations China issued over the weekend. In the paper, Beijing said it is willing to work with the US in finding a solution for the trade dispute but warned that it is not afraid of a trade war if it gets to that.

US President Donald Trump "is committed to taking action to address the unfair trade practices that China has engaged in for decades, which have contributed to persistent and unsustainable trade deficits, almost $420 billion last year, and have caused severe harm to American workers, farmers, ranchers, and businesses," the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) said in a statement.

The USTR accused Beijing of a long record of "unfair trade practices" and said that "China back-pedaled on important elements of what the parties had agreed to." The statement from the USTR added that "insistence on detailed and enforceable commitments from the Chinese in no way constitutes a threat to Chinese sovereignty."
