US claims 'no prior knowledge' of Sri Lanka attacks

United States Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Alaina Teplitz, stated on Wednesday that Washington had "no knowledge" of any threats in the south Asian country prior to the deadly Easter bomb attacks that claimed the lives of more than 350 people.

Speaking to foreign journalists in the US embassy in Colombo, Teplitz noted that there is a "right-sized" team of FBI agents and military officials helping Sri Lankan authorities investigate the deadly attacks. However, she added there was "clearly" some kind of a failure in Sri Lanka's system that disabled its authorities from preventing the massacre.

Yesterday, the Islamic State took credit for the attacks despite not offering any evidence to support the claim. Earlier this week, the government of Sri Lanka said that a local jihadist group was behind the tragic incident, and admitted to a massive intelligence failure as authorities were alerted about the attacks two weeks beforehand and had the names of the perpetrators.
