US condemns conviction of Aung San Suu Kyi

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned on Monday the Myanmar coup leaders over the prison sentence passed on the country's former State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and their "continued disregard for the rule of law and its widespread use of violence against the Burmese people."

"We urge the regime to release Aung San Suu Kyi and all those unjustly detained, including other democratically elected officials. We reiterate our call for the regime to engage in constructive dialogue with all parties to seek a peaceful resolution in the interest of the people, as agreed to in the ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations] Five-Point Consensus," Blinken's written statement read.

Earlier in the day, a special court sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison over her opposition to the military junta and alleged breaking of the rules imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19. The former leader is still facing more charges.
