US 'disappointed' with Hagia Sophia decision

The United States government expressed disappointment over the decision to turn Hagia Sophia, currently a museum, back to a mosque.

"We are disappointed by the decision by the Government of Turkey to change the status of the Hagia Sophia. This building is an important part of the ‘Historic Sites of Istanbul’ UNESCO World Heritage Site, in recognition of its rich multicultural history," a spokesperson for the Department of State said.

Maybe the best-known landmark in Istanbul, Hagia Sophia was initially an Orthodox church before being converted into a mosque. In 1931, it was transformed into a museum by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
