US durable goods orders down 0.2% in January

New orders for manufactured durable goods in the United States in January declined 0.2% or $0.4 billion to $246.2 billion, the US Census Bureau reported on Thursday. The better-than-expected preliminary figure comes after a 2.9% increase in December.

Excluding transportation, new orders rose 0.9%, while excluding defense orders increased by 3.6%.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods decreased for the seventh consecutive month, falling $0.5 billion or 0.2% to $250.1 billion. Unfilled orders for last month were virtually unchanged at $1,157 billion.
