US durable goods orders down 0.4% in September

New orders for manufactured durable goods in the United States declined less-than-expected 0.4% or $1 billion in September to land at $261.3 billion, according to a report published by the Census Bureau on Wednesday.

Excluding transportation, new orders increased by 0.4%, the report noted, adding that excluding defense, new orders decreased 2%. Transportation equipment led the decrease by dropping $1.8 billion or 2.3 percent to $77.7 billion.

Shipments of manufactured durable goods rose by $1.1 billion or 0.4% to $257.0 billion, while unfilled orders expanded by $8.8 billion or 0.7% to $1,247.1 billion. Inventories gained $4 billion or 0.9% to $462.7 billion, with nondefense new orders declining $3.7 billion or 4.2% to $84.9 billion.
