US durable goods orders up 3.4% in January

New orders for manufactured durable goods in the United States in January increased $8.5 billion or 3.4% to $256.6 billion, according to a preliminary report by the US Census Bureau on Thursday. The jump in order was well above expectations of around 1.1%. The figures for December were revised up, with orders rising by 1.2%, instead of the preliminary 0.2%.

Durable goods orders have so far grown for nine consecutive months, the Bureau stated. Excluding transportation, new orders were up by 1.4% in January. Excluding defense, they increased 2.3%. Transportation led the overall increase, up by $6.1 billion or 7.8% to $85.1 billion.
