US govt describes Southwest cancellations as 'meltdown'
US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg (pictured) described Wednesday the Southwest Airlines crisis as a "meltdown" while stressing that the situation has already gone "beyond the point" where it can be described as a "weather problem."
In an interview early in the morning, the secretary recognized that the issue began with the strong winter storm that hit the country over the weekend, affecting the "entire aviation system." However, today there is a difference between Southwest and the rest of the airlines, which indicates "a system failure."
Buttigieg's remarks come a day after US President Joe Biden also stated that the administration "is working to ensure airlines are held accountable."
