US House votes in favor of Uyghur bill

The United States House of Representatives voted in favor of the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2019, which would enable imposing sanctions on high-ranking officials in Beijing.

The House passed the bill with bipartisan support as 407 lawmakers voting for and one voting against it. It will still need to be passed by the US Senate and, at the next stage, be signed by President Donald Trump.

The bill condemns alleged human rights violations of Uyghur Muslims committed by the Chinese government officials in the province of Xinjiang and calls for sanctions against Xinjiang Communist Party Secretary Chen Quanguo.
