US industrial production up 0.4% in May

Industrial production in the United States increased by 0.4% in May compared to the previous month, according to data released by the Federal Reserve on Friday.

The main contributor to the figure was the utilities index, which climbed 2.1%. Manufacturing was up 0.2% and mining output added 0.1% in May.

On an annual basis, total industrial production rose 2% from May 2018. Meanwhile, the capacity utilization in the industrial sector in May stood at 78.1%, up 0.2 percentage points month on month but 1.7 percentage points below its long-run average.
