US initial jobless claims down by 97,000 to 684,000

The number of initial jobless claims in the United States for the week ending March 20 fell by 97,000 compared to the previous week's revised figure to land at 684,000, the Labor Department reported on Thursday.

The 4-week moving average was 736,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's level was revised up by 2,750 to 749,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7% for the week ending March 13, 0.2 percentage point lower than the previous week's revised rate. Insured unemployment during the same week was 3,870,000, a decrease of 264,000 from the previous week's revised level.
