US initial jobless claims rise by 23,000 to 885,000

The number of initial jobless claims in the United States stood at 885,000 in the week ending December 12, increasing by 23,000 compared to the previous week's revised level, the US Department of Labor announced on Thursday.

The 4-week moving average landed at 812,500, marking a growth of 34,250 from the week prior, which was revised up by 2,250 to 778,250.

The seasonally adjusted insured unemployment for the week ending December 5 declined by 273,000 weekly to 5,508,000, while the advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate slid 0.1 percentage point compared to the previous seven-day period to 3.8% in the same week.
