US initial jobless claims up by 18,000 to 185,000

The initial jobless claims in the United States increased by more than expected 18,000 compared to the previous week's revised level to reach 185,000 in the week ending April 9, according to a report published by the Labor Department on Thursday.

While the monthly moving average rose by 2,000 to 172,250 from the previous week, the last week's average was revised up by 250 to 170,250.

The insured unemployment rate remained unchanged at 1.1% for the week ending April 2, with the advance number declining by 48,000 to 1,475,000. The 4-week moving average went down by 29,750 to land at 1,511,500.
