US initial jobless claims up by 55,000 to 286,000

The number of initial jobless claims in the United States for the week ending January 15 increased by 55,000 compared to the previous week's revised figure to land at 286,000, US Labor Department reported on Thursday.

The figure was higher than analysts had expected.

Meanwhile, the advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate stood at 1.2% for the week ending January 8, rising by 0.1 percentage point compared to the previous week's unrevised rate. Insured unemployment during the same week grew by 84,000 to 1,635,000. The four-week moving average landed at 1,664,250, decreasing by 55,250 compared to the week prior.
