US job openings down to 8.7 million in October

Job openings in the United States fell by 617,000 in October compared to the previous month to hit 8.7 million, with the job opening rate at 5.3%, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Tuesday. The figure was much lower than analysts had expected.

The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) said that the number of hires was little changed at 5.9 million, while the hires rate stood at 3.7% for the fourth consecutive month.

The total separations or turnover rate was 3.6% for the fifth consecutive month, at 5.6 million in October. Quits stood at 3.6 million, while layoffs and discharges were little changed compared to September at 1.6 million.
