US job openings up to record 9.3 million in April

The number of job openings in the United States rose to a data-series-record-breaking 9.3 million in April, compared to 8.3 million documented in March, the country's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Tuesday. The job openings rate climbed 0.6 percentage points month-over-month to 6%.

The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) showed that the number of hires was little changed at 6.1 million and that the hire rates were unchanged on a monthly basis at 4.2%.

The separation rate rose by 0.2 percentage points from March to 4% in April and the total separations levels climbed by 324,000 to 5.76 million. The quits rate grew 0.2 percentage points month-on-month to stand at a series-high 2.7%, while the layoffs and discharges rate declined by 0.1 percentage point to land at 1%.
