US jobless claims down by 2,000 to 184,000

Jobless claims in the United States decreased by 2,000 to 184,000 for the week ending April 16, according to the latest report by the Department of Labor. While the number of claims dropped, it still remained above the expected figure of 180,000. The 4-week moving average was 177,250, an increase of 4,500 from the previous week's revised average.

The insured unemployment rate was 1% for the week ending April 9, 0.1 percentage points less than the previous week. Insured unemployment in that period stood at 1,417,000, the lowest level since February 21, 1970. The 4-week moving average was 1,481,750, a decrease of 31,250 from the previous week's revised average and the lowest level for this average since March 21, 1970.
