US looks to block Huawei from buying US-made tech

The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), an agency of the United States Department of Commerce, revealed on Friday that it introduced a rule change that would prevent Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.'s "efforts to undermine US export controls."

The measure will be "strategically" aimed against "Huawei's acquisition of semiconductors that are the direct product of certain US software and technology," the department said. Huawei and its non-US chipset and semiconductor suppliers who base their designs on American technology must seek specific licenses from the US commerce department to acquire such technology from now on.

"We must amend our rules exploited by Huawei and [Huawei's affiliate] HiSilicon and prevent US technologies from enabling malign activities contrary to US national security and foreign policy interests," Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross claimed in a statement.
