US markets close mostly lower amid Congress stalemate

Equities on major United States stock markets closed the trading session on Friday mostly lower as the Republicans' and the Democrats' leaders again blamed the other side for the congressional stalemate on another round of economic stimulus from the US government. Meanwhile, the latest data showed that the number of initial jobless claimed dropped below one million for the first time since mid-March.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index declined by 0.29% at the close, while the S&P 500 lost 0.20%. Both indexes were dragged down by Cisco Systems, which dropped 11.19% on weak earnings guidance. The Nasdaq 100 increased by 0.19% as the trading session ended. Zoom Video Communications gained the most, 4.45%.

The euro was 0.20% higher compared to the dollar to change hands for 1.18080 at 4:03 pm ET.
