US markets lower, Dow tumbles 300 pts after opening
US equities opened higher for a minute in the last trading session of a volatile week when the Dow began to fall more than 300 points. Earlier the Bureau of Economic Analysis published its report on personal spending, showing a slump of 0.6% in December. Colgate, Chevron, and Caterpillar posted revenue reports, as precious metals traded in the red and oil moved up 1%.
The Dow Jones lost 0.87% at 9:57 am ET, with Caterpillar down by 4.21%. The Nasdaq 100 fell 0.48%, while Lucid Group decreased by 9.55%, and the S&P 500 declined 0.65%, as Western Digital dropped 8.01%. The euro was flat against the dollar at 9:28 am ET, selling for $1.11487.
