US markets open with gains after data

Wall Street started the day higher on Thursday, recovering some losses from the day before, as data from the United States showed that jobless claims increased by 9,000 to 220,000 while industrial production decreased by 0.2% and retail sales were 0.7% higher in July.

Before the bell, Alibaba and Walmart posted their earnings. After the trading day ends, investors will be expecting quarterly figures from Nvidia.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was 0.23% in the green in the first minute of trading. Walmart surged 6.55% at 9:32 am ET.

The Nasdaq 100 rose 0.23% at 9:30 am ET. Hybrid cloud data services and data management company NetApp led the index higher as it jumped 5.12% at 9:38 am ET after it posted better-than-expected results.

The S&P 500 increased 0.22% at 9:30 am ET.

The euro was flat against the dollar, trading 0.02% in the red at 9:39 am ET as it went for 1.11359.
