US monthly budget deficit at $134B in October

The United States budget deficit increased to $134 billion in October, the US Treasury Department said in a release on Wednesday.

Total receipts in October fell by 3% year-on-year to $246 billion and total outlays were at $380 billion, increasing 8% from October 2018. Most of the receipts came from individual income taxes ($126 billion) and social insurance and retirement ($90 billion) while the outlays were mostly attributed to social security ($89 billion), national defense ($64 billion), Medicare ($56 billion), and health ($51 billion).

Looking at the year-to-date figures for fiscal 2019, the deficit stood at $984.4 billion with receipts at $3.46 trillion and outlays at $4.45 trillion.
