US nonfarm payrolls rise by 145,000 in December

Nonfarm employment in the United States increased by 145,000 in December, missing the estimates that saw it landing at 164,000, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Friday. Retail trade with 41,000 additional jobs and health care with 28,000 new positions led the growth in nonfarm payroll employment while the mining sector lost 8,000 jobs in December.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate remained unchanged as it stood at 3.5% in the same month with 5.8 million unemployed persons. However, it was down from a jobless rate of 3.9% recorded in December 2018 when 6.3 million US citizens were unemployed.

Average hourly earnings in the private sector climbed by 3 cents month-over-month to $28.32 in December. On an annual basis, the figure grew by 2.9%.
