US retail sales down 0.3% in September

The value of retail and food services sales stood at $525.6 billion in September, representing a decrease of 0.3% on a monthly basis but a gain of 4.1% year-over-year, unadjusted for price changes, the United States Census Bureau announced in an advanced estimate on Wednesday.

Total sales for the period of three months ending in September increased by 4.0% compared to the same period a year ago. Meanwhile, retail trade sales were 0.3% lower than in August but 4.0% higher than in September 2018.

Non-store retailers recorded a rise of 12.9%, while miscellaneous stores had 9.3% growth on a yearly basis.
