US retail sales rise 0.5% in May

Seasonally adjusted advanced estimates of retail sales and food services in the United States in May were up 0.5% to $519.0 billion compared to the month before that, the US Census Bureau reported on Friday.

On an annual basis, the figure was up 3.2%. Meanwhile, in the period from March through May, retail sales increased by 3.6% compared to a year ago.

Retail trade sales increased by 0.5% from April this year and rose 3.1% compared to the same month last year. Nonstore retailers added 11.4% from May 2018 while sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument, and book stores were down 4.2% year-on-year.
