US sanctions 24 Chinese firms over ties to military activities

The United States Commerce Department imposed sanctions on Friday on 24 Chinese governmental and commercial organizations over "engaging in activities contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests" of the US.

The companies accused of having ties to weapons of mass destruction and military activities include those based in mainland China, as well as in Hong Kong and the Cayman Islands. "The new additions to the Entity List demonstrate our commitment to preventing the use of US commodities and technologies in activities that undermine our interests," Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross (pictured) stated.

The Commerce Department also added nine Chinese entities to its Entity List, claiming they are "complicit" in human righs abuses against Muslim minorities in Xinjiang. The move comes amid rising tensions between the Washington and Beijing over the coronavirus, as well as China's proposed Hong Kong national security law.
