US sees space as war theater - Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected on Wednesday the decision made by the leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to recognize space as the fifth domain covered by the military alliance during its summit in London, blasting the United States for trying to expand its military might to space.

Putin criticized the United States for "openly regarding space as a war theater," saying that the only reason behind Washington pursuing the idea to carry out military operations in space is to retain dominance in this field. The Russian leader also stated that Moscow "has always been and will remain opposed" to subduing space to military purposes, while other leading countries of the world are "actively developing modern space systems for military use."

Although NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg backed the decision, he warned that the alliance has "no intention to put weapons in space."

Earlier this year, US President set up a separate military command for space with the goal of defending America's "vital interests" in space which he described as the "next warfighting domain."
